Traditional Chinese Taxonomy of Learning |
Module Description : |
This module aims to depict the development and evolution of traditional Chinese scholarship. Topics covered include (1) Jing ("Classics"): Chinese classic texts; (2) Shi ("Histories"): Traditional historiography; (3) Zi ("Masters"): Miscellaneous genres philosophy, arts and science, among others, and (4) Ji ("Collections"): Literary Collections. Emphasis will be given to how works of different genres and nature made their ways into the so-called “Emperor’s Four Treasuries” (Siku Quanshu), the largest collection of books in Chinese history compiled during the mid-eighteenth century based on the Quadripartite System (sibu) of knowledge classification. This course is designed for students majoring in Chinese Studies. |
