1. Introduction

 

1.1 Purpose of the Document:

This document gives an overview of the Staff Research Directory (SRD) System and guides the user to perform all the functions of the system. It describes the operational details on

-               Searching for research area and staff details

-               Browsing for research area and staff details by faculty

-               Updating the research profiles of individual staff (open to NUS staff only)

 

1.2 Overview of the System:

The Staff Research Directory System is a central database that captures the research profiles of all the academic and research staff at NUS. This simple, yet powerful database provides you an outline of areas in which research is conducted at NUS and details of staff conducting research in a particular area.

 

The Staff Research Directory essentially has 2 parts, (i) Search Research Directory, which is open to the public as well as NUS staff and which allows the user to search for information and (ii) Update Research Profile, which is open only to NUS staff and allows the staff to add, edit or delete information on their specific areas of research interest.


 

2. Operational Guide:

2.1 Search Research Directory

2.1.1 General Search

If you are interested in knowing details about a particular research area or the research areas of a particular staff, you can use General Search to obtain information.

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Steps: (to search by Research Area)

1.      Type the research area of your interest in the textbox next to Research area and click Search Button.

2.      The Staff Research Directory System will display the list of related research areas and staff working in that research area.

3.      Click any of the staff names to get more details of the staff.

4.      If no staff is working in the research area of your interest, the Staff Research Directory System will display the message “Sorry, your search didn't find anything. Please revise your search condition and try it again”. Click Return to Search Research Directory to search again.

 

 

Steps: (to search by Staff Name)

1.      Type the staff name of your interest in the textbox next to Staff Name and click Search Button.

2.      The Staff Research Directory System will list the research areas of the staff.

3.      If you have typed the staff name only partially, e.g., “Lim”, the Staff Research Directory System will list all the staff names containing the word “Lim” and their research areas.

4.      Click any of the staff names to get more details of the staff.

5.      If no staff is present by the name you searched, the Staff Research Directory System will display the message “Sorry, your search didn't find anything. Please revise your search condition and try it again”. Click Return to Search Research Directory to search again.


 

2.1.2 Advanced Search

Advanced Search allows you to search either by Specific Research Area or by Staff Name or by Department or by a combination of these options.

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Steps:

1.      Select a department from the pull-down menu next to Department. If you are not sure of which department to select, select All.

2.      Type the research area of your interest in the textbox next to Specific Research Area. Leave the textbox blank if you do not want to use this option or if you are not sure about the research areas.

3.      Type the staff name in the textbox next to Staff Name. Leave the textbox blank if you do not wish to search by staff name or if you do not know the staff name.

Note that if you enter the staff name only partially, e.g., Tan, the Staff Research Directory System will list all the staff name containing the word “Tan”.

4.      Select AND / OR / NOT from the pull down menu.

If you select AND, the Staff Research Directory System will display the list that contains both the Specific Research Area and Staff Name you have entered. 

If you select OR, the Staff Research Directory System will display the list that contains either the Specific Research Area or the Staff Name you have entered.

If you select NOT, the Staff Research Directory System will display the list that contains only the Specific Research Area you have entered and excludes all the data that contains the Staff Name entered.

5.      Click Search button. The Staff Research Directory System will list the research area and the staff name that satisfies your search option as explained above.

6.      If no information is available to meet your search options, the Staff Research Directory System will display the message Sorry, your search didn't find anything. Please revise your search condition and try it again”. Click Return to Search Research Directory to search again.


2.1.3 Browse by Faculty

This option allows you to search for information by faculty, department and Research Institutes/Centres (RICs).

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Steps:

  1. Click “Browse by Faculty”. The list of faculties, University-level RICs, National- level RICs and other units will be displayed.
  2. (a) To search for information on faculties, click the name of any faculty. The list of departments or centres under the faculty will be displayed. Click on any department to list the academic and research staff of the department and their specific research areas. Click the staff name to get more details of the staff.

2.   (b) To search for information on RICs, click the name of the RIC. The list of staff under the RIC will be displayed. Click the staff name to get more details.

2.   (c) Click Others to list other research centres and institutes. From the list displayed, select the centre/institute of your interest and click. The list of staff of the centre/institute will be displayed. Click the staff name to get more details.

3.  Click Browse/Search Research Directory to make another search or Home to return to main page.

2.2 Update Research Profile

2.2.1 Log In

Every time you enter the system, you will be prompted to enter the staff number and password. Please enter your staff number and staff card password and click Log in button. You will see the following screen:

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


2.2.2 Add Specific Research Area

To add a new research area, please follow the steps  below:

  1. Place your cursor in the textbox next to Specific Research Area and click.
  2. At the cursor, type the new area you would like to add.
  3. Click Add button.
  4. Click Save button.

Repeat steps 1 to 4 to add another research area.

 

2.2.3 Edit Specific Research Area

To edit an existing research area, please follow the steps as below:

  1. Select the Research Area you would like to edit by clicking the radio button on the side.
  2. Click Edit. The selected research area will be displayed in the textbox.
  3. Modify the research area and click Add button. If you have selected a wrong research area, click Add button first, then select the correct Research Area and repeat steps 1 – 3.
  4. Click Save button.

Repeat steps 1 to 4 to edit another research area.

 

2.2.4 Delete Specific Research Area

If you wish to remove any research area from your file, please follow the steps  below:

  1. Select the Research Area by clicking the radio button on the side.
  2. Click Delete Button. The selected research area will be deleted from your research profile.
  3. Click Save button.

 

Important Note: Any changes you make to the system will not be updated in the database until you save the changes. You can either choose to save the changes after each action (the last step of Add, Edit and Delete process as explained above) or save all the changes at the end of your session by clicking the Save button once.

 

2.2.5 Log Off

Please ensure that log off at the end of your session to prevent other users from editing your research profile.
